'Follow your passion’ is actually bad advice.

As we all know by now, I’m quitting my job!

Woop woop!

Last week, I sat down with one of the best career coaches on LinkedIn.

She’s called Cristina Espinal (yes - we have the same name)

She’s the founder of Play Big Careers and a career coach to CEOs, founders, and VPs, helping them pivot in their careers.

We sat down for 60 minutes and answered so many deep questions:

  • “How do you find your purpose?”
  • “How do you make a job more meaningful?”
  • ”Should you make your passion or job, or keep it as a hobby?”

It was super inspiring (excited to get the video out for you guys).

But one thing she said stuck with me.

I’ve always found it cliché to ‘follow your passion’, because I’m literally passionate about so many things.

But career coach Cristina explained that ultimately, we all crave security.
Whether you want to be a:

  • Travel content creator
  • Business owner
  • Therapist
  • Doctor
  • Lawyer
We all crave security.

When we chase after a bigger, better job title, because we crave being safe.
We want the title that guarantees:

  • A good income.
  • A roof over our heads
  • Respect from our family and friends.
  •
But as we go into 2026 (we’ve all seen the headlines), there is no such thing as a safe job anymore.

But it’s not just security; we fall for the trap of chasing purpose and joy outside ourselves.

We chase:
  • Fulfilment outside of ourselves.
  • Security outside of ourselves.
  • Purpose outside of ourselves.
  • Joy outside of ourselves.
No wonder we feel lost.

Cristina explained that much of her work is actually teaching people to start looking inward rather than outward.

And this ultimately is the reason why I’m leaving my job.

I no longer want to chase fulfilment in the NHS.

The only joy and fulfilment you experience is what you create for yourself.

And that's exactly what I'm planning to do from now on.

Where are you chasing joy and fulfilment right now?

Is it outside of yourself or inside?

Speak soon,
Christina Aaliyah
